Hi,

May is about to take off on its own Momentum - or so it seems to me. I'll be off on holiday for a week (10th - 17th) and partly as a consequence, very busy the rest of the time. But when I look again at how the month is unfolding,I can see that the pattern is one I have created. It's not just accident or luck.

Who's designing your life?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The work I'm booked to do is for a mix of clients, some of whom have been with me for a while and others with whom I'll be working for the first time. These new invitations though, have arisen as a result of longstanding contacts. Stephen Covey reminds us that we are designing our lives - be it our working or our personal lives - whether or not we are aware of the fact. If we don't consciously formulate a plan, we follow the default plan which we've learned or picked up without noticing. If he's right, and my experience tells me he is, then it's a good idea to get to the drawing board and take charge of the design process.
There's been talk in the media about 'cosmic ordering' and of course it's facile to think we can just sit back and issue a wish list to God, the universe or whatever. For some people, any talk of the 'Laws of Attraction' is so much mumbo jumbo. But wherever we are on the spectrum of opinion, most of us would agree that we have some responsibility for what happens in our lives.
If we take initiatives in the areas over which we have control, and remain alert to what is going on around us, then we will be in a stronger position to handle circumstances which are beyond our control. And these are fewer than we imagine! I was about to write that the weather is an example of something we can't influence until I realised that of course that's true only in the short term. In the longer term we know to our cost that human choices do affect the climate. (Switch off the standby button!)
Returning from the global to the local, I said in my intro that it's not just accident or luck that I'm working with my current clients. All of them without exception I gained through making personal contact - and maintaining some of them for several years before they bore fruit in terms of actual work booked. This is what the marketing gurus call 'the pipeline'. You don't just turn on a tap and expect water to appear by magic. It comes through a pipeline from a reservoir and sometimes travels a long way. So if we want work to 'come out of the tap', we need to be filling the reservoir with contacts and the pipeline with prospects.
To learn more about this, I recommend Robert Middleton's ezine which contains good tips and references to useful marketing materials.
Taking my own Advice
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I need to remember to keep filling the reservoir and the pipeline when I'm busy! In the past I've raised my head over the parapet to discover that less work is coming in because I've neglected to keep marketing activities going in a period when I've lots of work on the go. It's tempting to assume it will roll on under its own steam but the needs of clients change. They may move location, or make different budgetary decisions. Even 'good' clients can go off our radar.
It doesn't have to be complicated. Stay in touch with existing contacts, diary in opportunities to network and respond to any openings that present themselves. Here comes another recommendation!

You'll have received the marketing mailout about '...and death came third! The Definitive Guide to Networking and Speaking in Public' by Andy Lopata and Peter Roper. I'm reading my copy at the moment and it really does what it says on the tin. You can find out about it (and its intriguing title) by clicking the link below website.

Thank you for your appreciative comments about my book. If you can take 5 minutes to add them to the Amazon website, that would be wonderful. You need to create an account with Amazon to be allowed to post a comment. It doesn't take long but if you prefer to send your comments in an email straight to me, I can send them to the publisher's site.
I'm having fun speaking at networking events so if you belong to an organisation that likes to have lively speakers, I'm happy to oblige. Give me a call to discuss your workshop, event or conference. Recent topics include 'You are your business:gain a competitive edge from the inside out'. and 'How to Close a Business Conversation'.

Firework Career Coaching Programme
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm delighted to be part of the team bringing Firework Career Coaching to Scotland. Created by Marianne Craig and Kate Edmonds, it's a programme for coaches. The training day is on Friday June 9th in Glasgow and will be led by Marianne, herself an ICF Master Certified Coach.
With many people reportedly unhappy in their work, large numbers are looking for help to find work that they’ll enjoy. They’re prepared to invest in finding career direction and want a process they can go through to give them answers. The Firework Career Coaching Programme gives coaches (and career guidance specialists) a powerful framework to help clients find a career they’ll love.
“I've really been enjoying using the Firework materials, and my clients seem to be also. Thanks again for a wonderful toolset!” Chris Rigden, British Telecom Leadership Coach
