  • What is it you actually do?

I'm supposed to be able to answer that question in a punchy statement, maximum 30 words, sometimes called an 'elevator statement' - because you've time to say it between floors! I've wrestled with that in the 9 years of WORDS in ACTION because I offer such a wide range of services that I find it hard to sum them up.

What's common to them all is my deep concern for individuals to be comfortable in their own skin and for groups to function well together. Clear communication and a healthy awareness of what makes us tick as individuals and in groups is essential for personal satisfaction and for organisations to function well. To adapt Clinton's famous dictum, 'It's the people, stupid'!

    Holistic Breaks

Taken last summer, this is one of the many lovely sunsets to be enjoyed here on Bute. As you can imagine, there have been plenty this year! It's a cliche to say that when we get the weather, Scotland is just a wonderful place to be - and it's true. If you choose to come for a holistic break, we can't promise sunshine. In fact it bucketed with rain and buffeted us with wind on the pilot weekend but that didn't seem to dampen enthusiasm. 'Recharged me for work/city/life', 'I would be more than happy to come back as soon as possible and bring some friends'.

So what's happening about the holistic breaks? At the moment, they are available by arrangement. This means that if you'd like to come for a short break to chill out, take stock and recharge your batteries, you can choose your own dates and we'll book coaching and complementary therapy treatments or whatever else you'd like to do. You can book your own accommodation (we can suggest options) or we can book it on your behalf.

The website has examples of the options and details of how to get here! Come on your own for a spot of solitude, bring a friend for company, come as a group. Tell us what you'd like. Ring 01700 500489 or email info@wordsinaction.net

You never got to be a train driver?
    mecolour

You and how many other boys - and girls! Now you’re a journalist, an accountant, a headmaster, a research scientist, a vet, just like some of today’s train drivers. Yes, I’ve just picked up a report on the BBC about all the people training to work on the railways. (Sorry!)

They have exchanged their profession for a career which in the past, though highly skilled, did not carry high status in society. Why are they doing this? The pay is good – it may be a shift up or down depending on what you’re used to, but it’s above the national average. There’s a lot less paperwork than in many jobs and the hours, though sometimes ‘anti- social’, are largely predictable. A former vet who was interviewed said that though his new job involved working shifts, at least he knew what they were. He could plan ahead and enjoy his time off. ‘When you go through the gate at the end of a shift, you leave the job behind.’

I was fascinated because though a career coach, even I would have ruled that out as impossible – and it’s not! Maybe you’ve given all you have to give in your present career. Maybe it’s just not the same job as it was when you began. If you have an inkling that it’s time for a change, look over the parapet and see what’s down the tracks.
