Momentum Coaching Issue

Hi,

Momentum always has a Coaching Corner. As International Coaching Week is coming up, I’m devoting the whole newsletter to coaching-related issues.

Coaching from a Spiritual Basis
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As ever, I begin with a personal experience. In January, I paid a second visit to Oliva, Spain, where Wilma Taggart runs an apartment rental business. This time, I bartered a week in one of the flats in return for coaching. Besides some not too onerous work, I relaxed and got some writing done. A real ‘win-win’. Wilma invited me to speak to a group of likeminded friends, billing me as ‘coaching from a spiritual basis’. This was interesting because I do not advertise myself in that way although my own core values are indeed rooted in the ‘spiritual’. Apparently it was obvious to Wilma.
I chose to speak about my spiritual journey and I began by asking them what the word ‘spiritual’ meant to them. You won’t be surprised to learn that there was a wide variety of words and pictures in response – everything from ‘energy source’ to ‘angels’. And that’s the challenge for me about using the word at all. There's a whole big discussion there! Suffice to say, that I do work with clients who are exploring the spiritual dimension of their lives or who have a professional connection with matters spiritual. For now, I plan to continue my practice of letting such clients find me by word of mouth rather than specifically advertise a service in this area.
And by the way, Wilma will give you a warm Scottish welcome in sunny Spain, if you decide to rest and recharge your spirit by booking a break at Orange Apartments in Oliva!
International Coaching Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alison International Coaching Week 5th –11th February Each year the International Coach Federation devotes a week to educate the public about the value of working with a personal or business coach. This year I’ve joined with three fellow coaches to create our personal selection of books on coaching and personal development. Click on the link below to download a PDF file with our recommendations. On the page, you’ll find the contact details of Di Airey, Kate French and Mark Lister, with whom I shared a fun promotional event last week. Why do I include the names of other coaches as well as my own? Most coaches believe in collaboration and in encouraging potential clients to speak to several coaches before making a choice. (Coaches make a choice too. We’ll say if we don’t feel we’re right for you!)

Dead Horse cantering towards you soon!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The launch of the print version of 'How to Stop Flogging a Dead Horse -The Business Owner's Guide to Creating Happy Endings' from www.BookShaker.com is scheduled for early March. I know many of you are keen to have an actual book rather than an electronic one. Not long to wait now!
However, a word to coaches. The e-book is very handy for working with clients as you can print off only those pages that you need. As it includes practical exercises and activities, you may copy these and pass them on.
"When things go wrong in business, there are lots of people who will tell us what we want to hear. Alison clearly illustrates that sometimes there are things we need to hear. And she shows what to do to change tack and move forward. Easy to read, very practical and a must for business people." Phil Olley, author of Counting Chickens, turning business dreams into reality. www.PhilOlley.com
Addicted to Anxiety?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
calm waters Over the last few months I have been meeting with a group of friends to follow Julia Cameron’s ‘The Artist’s Way’. Thousands of people all over the world have found it invaluable for rediscovering their creative energy whether in the area of a specific artistic medium or in creating a satisfying and fulfilling life. In it, she says,’ most of us hate to do something when we can obsess about something else instead’. Ouch. I hear my clients fretting about a possible course of action or a task they’re putting off. I’m saying to them – and to myself - ‘Either do something about it now, however small, or put it right off your agenda.’ It’s all about taking small steps in the right direction to break the ‘addiction to anxiety’ as Julia Cameron calls it.

One of the benefits of coaching is that you are held accountable for taking those small but important steps. I find that some clients expect to be 'told off' for not doing enough. Mostly I find that people have achieved great things and are quite surprised when I point out how much they've achieved and not how little.

Some of my clients live in the West of Scotland and enjoy coming across to Bute for coaching + a relaxing day out! I offer a blend of telephone and face-to-face sessions which can be in Glasgow or here on the island.

Why not call me to discuss how coaching can move you on? And when I ask ‘why not?’ it’s a genuine question. Sometimes people feel shy of ringing up. As someone who regularly works with my own coach or complementary therapist, I sometimes forget that it can feel like a big step if it’s completely new territory. It’s the first job of the coach to put you at ease. Any enquiry to me or to my fellow coaches is treated with respect – you’re the one in charge. After all if I have to talk you into hiring me, I wouldn’t be the right coach for you, would I? If you've wondered whether coaching is for you, ring and chat about it. +44 01700 500489 or email info@wordsinaction.net
